Who was Todd Wehr?

890 views   |   Last updated on Aug 12, 2015

C. Frederick "Todd" Wehr (1889-1965), industrialist and philanthropist, was co-founder of the Wehr Steel Company and the founder of the Todd Wehr Foundation, Inc. Wehr was a graduate of West Division High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

He and his brothers comprised the executive team of the Wehr Steel Company, which was founded in 1910 by his father, Henry Wehr. The company manufactured steel alloy castings for machine parts, as well as magnetic separators and brakes. During World War II, it received numerous "E" awards from the government for excellence in steel production.

In 1958, the company was reorganized as a division of the Wehr Corporation. Wehr became the chairman of the board, a position he held until his retirement in 1963.

Wehr left the bulk of his estate to a trust set up for charitable religious, scientific and educational purposes. Many Wisconsin universities and charitable organizations have benefited from the Todd Wehr Foundation, including Viterbo University, which received a grant to renovate the facility that now bears the name Todd Wehr Memorial Library.

Where do I find reference resources?

839 views   |   Last updated on Aug 12, 2015

Reference resources are usually things like dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks or other resources with great background information.

We have two main online reference resources: Credo Reference and Gale Virtual Reference Library.  Credo Reference is a database which provides full-text online versions of hundreds of high quality reference books in a wide variety of subjects.  Gale Virtual Reference Library is a smaller collection of reference books that are individually selected and purchased by Viterbo librarians.

There is also a print reference collection located in the library.  The reference collection is on the first floor of the library by the video and DVD collection.  All reference books have a call number that starts with REF.  Reference books must remain within the library for use.

Check VitCat to see if Viterbo has the book you are interested in. Enter the title of the book you are interested in the search box on the library home page.  For this example, we'll search for the book Spillover: animal infections and the next human pandemic by David Quammen.

Starting your VitCat search

After you hit enter, you will be brought to your list of results for your search.  In this case, Spillover is the first result on the list, but you could also use the options on the left to limit your options for books only.

Find out if the book you are interested in is currently available by clicking the availability link.

Find out if your book is currently available

The book is currently available, so use the call number (in this case, the call number is RA 639 .W36 S65 2013) to find the book on the shelf.

Many of the library's books are only available as ebooks.  In that case, rather than clicking the Availability link in your results list, click the View Now link.  From there choose one of the links below to go directly to the ebook.
